News from ICOMOS Indonesia about Yogyakarta (forwarded by Scott Robertson, an Australian architect based in Sydney with an interest in Joglo Houses)The report came from Dr Laretna Adishakti, ICOMOS Indonesia member in Yogyakarta.
Yesterday morning I met my friend Ibu Raden Ayu Hambarjan who is one of the staff
at the Sultan's Palace in Yogyakarta. We sent food to the Nur Hidayah Clinic in Wonokromo. The clinic was a very sad site. All the patients were being treated outside on the ground, alongside the busy and crowded street. In fact, at the time of the visit there was an amputation being performed by a surgeon, people lining the streets for food or money - in the foreground of buildings that have been levelled to the earth, this sort of thing is happening in many places in the city, and outside, especially in the county of Bantul.
At this time the needs are quite clear : 1. Tents - it is raining and so the need for watertight coverings is dire. 2. Food and water - there are kitchens in place but no food stuffs. 3. Mats and mattresses - especially for the injured and the sick. 4. Blankets or sarongs 5. Medicine 6. Gasoline 7. Clothing clearing of damaged sites is underway, and following this, plans for rebuilding houses and infrastructure.
